Lufa Farms is a 200 employee agricultural and technology company headquartered in Montreal, Quebec known to have built the world’s first commercial rooftop greenhouse and now the world’s BIGGEST rooftop greenhouse. Lufa Farms was founded in 2009 and the company’s first greenhouse was built in early 2011.
Lufa Farms’ fourth commercial rooftop greenhouse, located in the borough of Saint-Laurent, has been built since spring of 2020 but reached reached full production in August 2020, giving Lufa Farms a total of approximately 300,000 square feet of agricultural production. Doubling their production capacity, now feeding 2% of Montreal households.
The construction began back in September 2019 and was expected to be finished by March 2020.
The company now plans to expand into the United States Northeast and Southern Ontario.
Due to the COVID-19, in March, 2020, Lufa Farms saw a doubling of demand for their food, according Mohamed Hage, the company’s CEO.
At Lufa, about 100 varieties of vegetables and herbs are grown year-round.
The company’s CEO also told Globe and Mail the following: “We don’t use pesticides and our greenhouses use half the energy that a greenhouse at ground level would consume because we use heating from the building that rises up to the roof”
